Dortmund Bounce Back

Borussia Dortmund bounced back from their opening Champions League defeat against Napoli, by dismantling Marseille 3-0 thanks to a brace by Robert Lewandowski and a goal by Marco Reus at the Signal Iduna Park.

Last year’s finalists caught their French visitors on the break, resulting in Erik Durm setting up striker Lewandowski to finish with a simple tap in from close-range, with just under 20 minutes played in the first-half.

The German’s then grabbed their second goal in the 52nd minute, when a Reus free-kick evaded everyone, including the Marseille defence and spun through the hands of their keeper Steve Mandanda.

Dortmund did look like adding to their tally, as they opened up the away sides defence on more than one occasion on the counter-attack through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang while Marseille pushed forward looking to cut back the deficit.

Reus was at it again when he was brought down in the box by Nicolas N'Koulou, and the penalty was slotted confidently by goal scoring machine Lewandowski in the 80th minute, to all but wrap up this tie.

The visitors had no answer to their German compatriots, as their only chances came from a few long range efforts and a couple of Mathieu Valbuena set-pieces, but they will be thankful for the form of keeper their Mandanda as he made a handful of saves to keep the score-line somewhat respectable.

Jurgen Klopp’s men will be delighted to have put their Napoli nightmare behind them and will face another in-form side in the form of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal in their next Champions League tie.
