Different reports are indicating that Manchester United have either made NO attempt to tie down their star striker, or Wayne Rooney turned down talks over a new deal at Old Trafford.
Rooney’s current deal has only 18 months left and the Independent reported yesterday the striker had turned down United’s advances over a new deal.
Today the Mirror also blew new wind into the transfer rumour mill, by reporting United has not yet attempted new contract talks.
With eight goals and seven assists, the Man United striker has had a fine start into his domestic season despite United’s poor results in the Premier League so far.
Rooney’s two goals and six assists in just five Champions League games were also a major force behind The Red Devils’ group stage success.
United’s rivals Chelsea had made Rooney their prime target during last summer’s transfer window and were ready to pay £24m. However, United and David Moyes have been doing extremely well to keep their unsettled striker at Old Trafford.
The new rumours around Rooney’s contract situation won’t go unnoticed at Stamford Bridge and Jose Mourinho could fire a new bid next summer. The Chelsea manager is currently frustrated with his three strikers Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o.
Amongst them, all three, have only scored ten goals in Premier and Champions League together and Chelsea boss Mourinho has recently claimed his side would be on top of the log, if his strikers would find their form.
A January move for Rooney doesn’t look likely, because the striker would be ineligible to play for Chelsea in the Champions League and United can simply not afford to let him go.
But if the current Premier League champions would miss out on Champions League qualification, surely Rooney would opt for Jose’s lures to Stamford Bridge.
