African World Cup Qualifiers Wrap

It was an action packed Sunday in the African 2014 World Cup qualifiers as 14 goals were scored in six matches across the continent.

The first match of the day had no effect on who would qualify from Group F as Kenya beat Namibia 1-0. Nigeria had already qualified for the last stage of qualifying with a 2-0 win over Malawi on Saturday. The win for Kenya, though, saw them jump above Namibia to finish third in the group.

The second game of the day also had no bearing on the result of their group outcome as Zimbabwe drew 1-1 with Mozambique. The draw leaves Zimbabwe at the bottom of Group G without a win to their name while Mozambique are second from bottom. Egypt have already progressed from this group for the final stages of qualifying.

Group I was the most interesting of the day and saw Cameroon beat Libya 1-0 to advance ahead of them for the next stages of qualifying. Cameroon topped the group on 10 points with Libya closely behind them on nine while Togo beat the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 also on Sunday. Togo finished in third place in Group I on seven points while DR Congo picked up the wooden spoon.

In Group H, Benin and Rwanda were fighting to avoid the bottom spot. Benin were the better of the two sides beating Rwanda 2-0. Algeria have already guaranteed qualification from Group H.

The final match of the day was probably the most entertaining as Lesotho ran out 3-2 winners over Sudan in a five goal thriller. Neither team had won a match yet in Group D and Lesotho showed real fighting spirit to come from two goals down to run out victorious and pick up their first win in the qualifying campaign. Tsoanelo Koetle scored the winning goal for Lesotho five minutes from time.
