FC Barcelona superstar Neymar was left frustrated after finishing in third place and being beaten by Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for the FIFA Ballon d'Or title.
The 23-year-old became the first Brazilian to make it on to the podium since Kaka won the award in 2007.
However, Neymar only finished in third place with just 7.86% of the votes, while Ronaldo collected 27.76% and Messi ran away with the award after securing 41.33% of the votes.
"In all honesty, yes, I'd hoped to come second," he told Marca.
"But I'm over it now. It's another season and it's time to do things well all over again.
"Now I have to work a little bit more to be amongst the three finalists again."
Neymar's Barcelona and Selecao teammate Dani Alves also insisted the Brazil captain deserved to finish in second spot.
"Ya, it surprised me, but they cry when I say these things and speak my mind. When Leo stops winning it, it'll be Neymar," he told AS.
"Neymar has gone through an incredible evolution and he's a better player every day. Of course he'll keep competing for the award, he wants it and will work to win it."
Neymar's 7.86% of the votes was the lowest collected by a third-placed Ballon d'Or finalist in the award's history, eclipsing the previous lowest of 9.23% received by Xavi in 2011.
