Former Bafana Bafana striker, Steve Lekoelea, believes that Itumeleng Khune was South Africa’s best player on the pitch in their loss against Iraq.
Owen da Gama’s team were held to a 1-1 draw in their crucial final group stage fixture, which has seen them fall short of progression to the quarter-finals. Lekoelea believes that the team played well in the game, but also that it could have been worse if not for Itumeleng Khune’s performance in goal.
“I think they played very well,” he told Soccer Laduma. “Khune was amazing. We could have lost 3-1, but Khune was amazing. He was my Man of the Match.”
Lekoelea, who was part of the squad that travelled to the Olympic Games in 2000, also criticised the team’s lack of efficiency in the final third, especially in front of goal. However, he was still shocked to see the young stars crash out of the tournament.
“The finishing was poor, especially from (Gift) Motupa,” he continued. “The finishing was poor, but they played very well. They played like it was a cup game and I was shocked that they lost.”
