Angola End Bafana's CHAN Hopes

2016 CHAN Qualifiers

Result: Angola 1-2 Bafana Bafana

Date: 24 October 2015

Venue: De Novembre Stadium

Bafana Bafana will miss out on the 2016 African Nations Championship, after only managing a 2-1 win against Angola in their second leg tie on Saturday afternoon.

The opening exchanges proved to be an open affair and Bafana had the first opening inside the first five minutes but Ziyanda Zwane failed to direct his header on target.

Percy Tau looked to crown his first start with a goal but his header was cleared off the line after 20 minutes.

Bafana eventually took the lead in the 28th minute as Lyle Lakay's cross from the left was turned home by an Angolan defender.

However, the home side managed to level matters just before the halftime break through Gerson and extend the aggregate lead to 3-1.

Bafana nearly restored their lead in the 65th minute but Wandisile Letlabika's long range effort forced Damiao into a fine save.

Shakes Mashaba's side continued to see a lot more of the ball in the second half, although they struggled to create openings final third.

The home side squandered a glorious chance to take the lead in the 78th minute as Manuel Afonso rounded Wayne Sandilands, before firing wide with the goal at his mercy.

Luvuyo Mamela nearly restored Bafana's lead in the 85th minute but his effort from distance was thwarted by Damiao.

However, Bafana did grab a second goal thanks to a stunning effort from Lyle Lakay in stoppage time, although it proved to be a consolation in the tie, as Angola held on for the 3-2 aggregate win.

Here's how they line up:

Bafana Bafana: Wayne Sandilands (GK), Siyanda Zwane, Wandisile Letlabika (C),  Levy Mokgothu, Thabo September, Lyle Lakay,  Mlungisi Mbunjane, Michael Morton, Pule Eksteen, Bongani Ndulula, Percy Tau.

Angola: Damio, Costa, Cussanada, Mafuta, Fonseca, Dala, Ribeiro, Afonso, Quiame, Cardoso, Da Costa
