2018 World Cup Qualifier
Result: Bafana Bafana 3-1 Burkina Faso
Date: 07 October 2017
Venue: FNB Stadium
Bafana Bafana maintained their hopes of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup with a 3-1 win over Burkina Faso.
The hosts took the lead inside the first minute when Percy Tau's header was adjudged to have crossed the line by the assistant referee.
The visitors started enjoying most of the possession and they nearly leveled matters after 11 minutes but Issoufa Ouattara's close-range shot was deflected wide by Clayton Daniels.
The game opened up after 25 minutes with both sides signalling their intent to attack.
However, it was Bafana who doubled their lead in the 36th minute as Themba Zwane broke through on goal and calmly slotted past goalkeeper Steeve Yago.
When it looked as if Bafana were heading into the break with a two-goal lead, Tau turned provider to pick out Sibusiso Vilakazi, who made no mistake from six-yards out to get the home side's third goal.
Zwane had a great chance to extend Bafana's advantage shortly after the halftime break as the Mamelodi Sundowns winger skipped past two challenges before firing wide with only Yago to beat.
Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was finally called into action after 54 minutes as he rushed off his line to thwart Bertrand Traore in the box.
Tau was proving to be a real menace as he carved out a chance for Vilakazi in the box, but the latter sent his effort wide of the upright on 60 minutes.
Bafana were dealt a blow after 66 minutes when Bongani Zungu was shown a straight red card after a scuffle broke out in the middle of the park.
With the hosts down to 10 men, Stuart Baxter opted to withdraw Andile Jali for Sundowns midfielder Hlompho Kekana for the final 20 minutes.
Burkina Faso, meanwhile, hardly threatened Khune's goal from open play despite having the numerical advantage.
The visitors did eventually pull a goal back in the 86th minute courtesy of a superb free-kick from Alain Traore that left Khune with no chance.
That was the final piece of action in the encounter, as the score remained 3-1 as the referee brought an end to the second half.
Here's how they lined up:
