Gallery: Six AFCON Stadiums Revealed

After South Africa became the final team to qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, here are the six stadiums that will host the tournament in Egypt.

Egypt will stage the 2019 AFCON after Cameroon were stripped of the hosting rights, as confirmed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in January.

The 2019 tournament will be the first edition with 24 teams taking part, and will be played out in six stadiums, according to the Egypt Football Association (EFA).

"We had initially proposed eight sites for the tournament but after an inspection by a CAF delegation, we chose only six," EFA spokesman Ahmed Megahed told the BBC.

Among the six venues is the Cairo International Stadium, which can hold up to 75 000 spectators, as well as the controversial Port Said Stadium.

The latter achieved infamy in 2012, when more than 70 people sadly passed away in Egypt's worst stadium tragedy after a riot broke out during a league game between Al Masry and Al Ahly. However, the stadium was subsequently renovated and the home team was only allowed to return in 2018.

The Air Force Stadium replaced the Al Salam Stadium, which, at times, hosts Al Ahly matches and was on the original list, in order to have enough time to prepare for the tournament because the Egyptian top flight only finishes close to 21 June, when the showpiece kicks off.

"It was decided then to replace it with the Air Force Stadium, which is also called the June 30 Stadium," Megahed explained.

The other three stadiums are the Ismailia Stadium, the Suez Sport Stadium and the Alexandria Stadium, but the EFA is yet to confirm which stadium will hosts the semi-finals and final.
