It's no a secret that Premier Soccer League (PSL)'s logo was inspired by the Barclays Premier League's. The lion logo has been the face of Premier League since its launch in 1992, and when PSL was given life in 1996 they took a leaf off ofthe Premier League's logo.
Not that it was a great idea to copy PL, but probably at the time PSL didn't have great marketing team. The iconic England's top-flight logo has now undergone a makeover, and has been replaced with a new-look modern one, which still displays a lion. Perhaps Cecil The Lion...
It must be sad though, the lion's face on that logo is really sad. Probably because Barclays will not be renewing their contract with the Premier League at the end of the season. The logo will be used from the 2016/17 season, and the league will only go solo, only called Premier League.
Since the logo that inspired PSL's own isn't alive anymore, I don't think PSL shouldn't continue with theirs either. Technology has advanced greatly since 1996, and what other way to celebrate 20 years of PSL than coming up with something new and raw, as well as unique and original?
Say something African, and more importantly Proudly South African. I mean, our football has a history that varies greatly to that of England. From a black- only league, to a multiracial one, surely we need something to tell our own story. The lion obviously represents something unique about English football, and which has no relevance to our own history. Twenty years of PSL should surely come with a new, modern look that also is African.
