Mthethwa: Why Pirates Had The Best Season

Mthethwa: Why Pirates Had The Best Season

Baba Mthethwa weighs in on the highlights of the recently completed South African football season

SuperSport TV commentator Baba Mthethwa has given his view on which team had a better 2022/23 season between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates and also dragged in Kaizer Chiefs into the topic.

Sundowns won the DStv Premiership title for the sixth consecutive season with seven games to spare but they could not retain the other two trophies, the MTN8 and the Nedbank Cup that they had won in the previous campaign.

Those two cups were won by Pirates, who also qualified for the CAF Champions League, after finishing as runners-up to Sundowns.

The legendary commentator, Mthethwa, was asked by Thomas Mlambo which team, according to him had the better season. He chose Pirates and explained why.

"I'd say Pirates had the better season. The difference between the two (Sundowns and Pirates) is that the league champions came with that pedigree of being league champions and that team did not change. There only was one or two changes," Mthethwa said on Vodacom Diski Chat.

"But Pirates had wholesale changes within their playing unit and that is a team that showed that 'we're stepping up. We're not champions but we can play better than the champions'.

"Looking at the general outlook of the season, where Pirates were four, five seasons ago, compared to where Sundowns were, Pirates had the better season," he said.

The veteran Sesotho commentator continued and said that what impressed him the most about Pirates was their defence and compared their defensive stats to Kaizer Chiefs, to prove that they were far superior.

"Sundowns had all the stars in the team, believe you me, we can say whatever we want, they are stars all of them and Pirates had to mix and match, here and there," he went on.

"They got second position, conceding less goals unlike other teams that conceded a lot of goals.

"At the bottom you have Marumo Gallants, Maritzburg United, Swallows conceded a lot of goals, then you go up in the top five, you have Kaizer Chiefs who have really conceded a lot of goals," he said.

"Compared to them and the relegated team, Chiefs and them had almost the same number of conceded goals."

Chiefs conceded 33 goals compared Gallants who conceded 34 and Amakhosi lost 12 games while Bahlabani Ba Ntwa lost 11 times in the DStv Premiership.

Pirates conceded 21 goals, the second-best defensive record behind Sundowns, who only conceded 13 goals.
