Nedbank Cup Last 32 Report: Polokwane City v Baroka FC 11 February 2020

Result: Polokwane City 0-1 Baroka

Date: 11 February 2020

Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium

Baroka FC booked their spot in the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup after narrowly defeating local rivals Polokwane City 1-0 on Tuesday evening.

Rise and Shine made a number of changes, with goalkeeper Mwenya Chibwe, Mohammed Anas and Bongile Booi among those recalled while Malawian defender Denis Chembezi was handed his debut.

Meanwhile, there was also a debutant in the Baroka line-up in former Bidvest Wits striker Ivan Mahangwahaya, who was among the four changes that included the return of shot-stopper Elvis Chipezeze, Tshidiso Patjie and Manuel Kambala.

City were cautious in the early exchanges but Puleng Tlolane nearly gave handed the hosts the lead in the ninth minute after unleashing a powerful drive from range but Chipezeze was on hand to make the save, while Denwin Farmer was saved from conceding an own goal a minute later.

Dylan Kerr's charges did not sit back and came close to getting the opener in the 23rd minute after Thamsanqa Masiya cut inside from the right channel before seeing his curling sail just over Chibwe's goal.

Frustration began to grow as Clinton Larsen's troops had a glorious chance to break the deadlock two minutes before the break after a rebound at the back fell kindly for Anas inside the box but the Ghanaian striker's goal-bound shot was blocked by Farmer.

After a slow start to the second stanza from both sides, Patjie went close for Rise and Shine on the hour-mark with a strike from the right channel that nearly caught Chibwe flat-footed at the near post but the Zambian goalkeeper reacted quickly with his legs to clear danger.

Second-half substitute Prince Nxumalo finally got the breakthrough for Bakgaga after finding the back of the net with an unorthordox finish from Gerald Phiri Junior's corner,

Charlton Mashumba almost forced extra-time in stoppage time with a glancing header inside the box but his effort sailed inches wide as Baroka held on to set up a last 16 tie against ABC Motsepe League side Hungry Lions.

Subs: Phali, Phiri, J. Maluleke, Mahlasela, W. Maluleke, Mashumba, Hlubi.

Baroka: Chipezeze, Farmer, Patjie, Kambala, Sampson, Phiri Jnr, Mosele, Mahangwahaya, Ngubane, Gerbhardt, Masiya.

Subs: Dlamini, Maloka, Nxumalo, Madondo, Makume, Khwinana, Mbulu.
