Another giant-killing act took place in the Nedbank Cup round of 32 as Mbombela United eliminated Cape Town City with a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon.
The Citizens made three changes for the clash as goalkeeper Sage Stephens started in goals while striker Siphelele Mthembu got a rare start in the absence of the injured Kermit Erasmus alongside Chris David.
The Cape Town side were looking to go further than the quarter-final place they reached last season before they were dumped out by Kaizer Chiefs.
Meanwhile, United, who are languishing in second-from-bottom place in the GladAfrica Championship. were looking to revive their season with a cup run after reaching the last 16 of this competition before being knocked out by Cape Umoya United.
The chances were few and far between in the opening phase but the second-tier side eventually broke the deadlock ten minutes before the break courtesy of a stunning strike by Justice Figuaredo.
Jan Olde Riekerink's charges were unable to carve out opportunities to get back to the game in the closing phases of the first half.
City were lucky not to be two goals down in the 63rd minute after Thulane Ndlela found the back of the net for United but the goal was disallowed for offside.
The Citizens were in danger of going through the same embarrassment they suffered in 2017 after going out in the first round following a 1-0 defeat to third-tier side Acornbush United in this tournament.
Unfortunately for the Absa Premiership outfit, no goal was forthcoming as they become the second top flight side to be eliminated by lower league opposition after Golden Arrows' shock loss on Saturday.
