After finding themselves in a very different situation to 12 months ago, Eric Tinkler says that Maritzburg are now in a situation to make sure they take the Nedbank Cup seriously…
Tinkler helped the Team of Choice achieve a remarkable feat as they managed to survive relegation in 2018/19 after a nightmare campaign in the Absa Premiership, surviving by the skin of their teeth after results in the first half of the campaign had gone drastically against them.
Now, with Maritzburg sixth on the league table – and already on 27 points, their entire tally for last season, there will be no relegation scrap in Pietermaritzburg this time around, and they're eager to progress when they face Stellenbosch FC on Friday.
Speaking to the club's official website this week, Tinkler said, "We are in a situation that we can take the game very seriously. If we were sitting at the bottom, I would think twice… We're sitting in a situation where we're doing well in the league. The most important thing is to keep the consistency – to keep that winning mentality."
Stellies host Maritzburg at 20h00 on Friday evening as both sides look to book their place in the Last 16 and take a step closer to some serious silverware for their respective clubs.
