Kodisang's Downs Move Analysed: 'That Might Have Swayed His Decision'

Kodisang's Downs Move Analysed: 'That Might Have Swayed His Decision'

A former Mamelodi Sundowns player has given his feelings over Kobamelo Kodisang's signing, praising the DStv Premiership champions for planning ahead for when the older generation leaves.

At 24, Kodisang comes in as a player who certainly has the potential to walk straight into the starting line-up and can be groomed into a leadership role for when the likes of Themba Zwane, Peter Shalulile and Thapelo Morena leave the club in future.

Kodisang comes in with much experience from his time in Portugal, as well as his time playing in major international tournaments with the country's junior national teams.

"Over the last few years, Sundowns has been good in planning ahead. When Hlompho left, there was a natural replacement. Even when the likes of Wayne Arendse and others left, there was always natural replacements and sometimes these players are signed two or three years in advance and that gives the player enough time to get used to Sundowns and to get the experience. Eventually when players leave, there is a natural replacement in the squad instead of signing a player only when one leaves. They've been quite good at signing younger players and giving them time to develop within the team," former Sundowns attacker Tyren Arendse said to the Siya crew.

"He was playing in Portuguese top league, so that in itself says a lot about him and his qualities. Sundowns have shown over the last few years that their scouting is good and it says a lot about them as a team that they signed him. He will add depth to the team and he will be a quality player for the club."

The Siya crew understands that one of the reasons Kodisang made a return to PSL football is to break into the Bafana Bafana team. Despite performing fairly well in Portugal, he was unable to feature for the senior national team.

"Because more than 50 percent of the Bafana team, when they do play, is from Sundowns, maybe he is looking at that. Also, the World Cup is in two years' time, so that could have been a deciding factor for him. Maybe he feels the best chance (of getting into the team) would be to join Sundowns because the coach will have a much closer look at him, if he plays. That might have swayed his decision to come back."
