South Africa's inter-varsity football competition known as Varsity Football, will get underway on Monday, July 21.
The Tshwane-based varsity, Tuks, won the cup in its inaugural year with a 4-1 over NMMU. This year sees the competition between the country's top varsity teams attracting the attention in the game.
According to a statement released by the organisers, the championships have attracted a number of professional scouts from PSL clubs such as former Bafana Bafana defender, Lucas Radebe and Bradley Carnell as well as Tuks coach, Steve Barker, to mention but a few.
The CEO for Varsity Sports, Duitser Bosman said the quality of the championships attracts huge crowds to the events.
"The excitement and quality of Varsity Football is what draws the crowds to these events. These high-energy events are well organised and offer huge spectator entertainment," said Bosman.
Trent Key, the Marketing and Sponsorship Executive for Varsity Sports also echoed Bosman's sentiments.
"Varsity Sports is seeing many promising sportsmen and women successfully compete at its events and gain the attention they deserve," said Key.
In the opening games, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University will take on North West University in Port Elizabeth, the defending champions University of Pretoria will challenge University of Free State in Tshwane, while University of the Western Cape is pitted against University of Johannesburg in Bellville as well as the University of Cape Town set to tussle against University of Limpopo respectively.
The competition will run from July 21 until September 15.
