SportPesa Doc's Column

SportPesa Doc's Column

SportPesa ambassador, Doctor Khumalo has been impressed with how SAFA has got the ball rolling within the national women's game. However, the Bafana Bafana legend urges that sponsorships should support women's football nationally.

"The beauty about this league is that there are teams that have already produced national and international players and that means there's a strong foundation to build on. This goes to show how important this league will be to our women's football because we've been calling for it for a long time now. We can't continue having our players only tested in tournaments which only come maybe once a year. Now our players will enjoy competitive football on a weekly basis. That means they will learn more and improve because the game is the teacher.

"Coaches can train the players all they want, but it is during match situations that you see an improvement and learning. That's when they will be able to improve the finer details of their games and be able to stand their own ground against their opponents who enjoy regular game-time at in their respective countries, when they are called up to the national teams. We have to make a call to the corporate world and everyone out there to please support this league in whatever way we can. SAFA have set the ball in motion, but it is up to all of us to make sure that this becomes a success.

"Yes, women's football isn't that big in South Africa at the moment, but that has to change and we can effect that change. If people can support Banyana Banyana, then it means there's a market for women's football out there. We need to find more sponsors to support this league so that our players can also benefit.

"I'm very pleased to see the progress made so far and long may it continue. This will go a long way in motivating and encouraging our ladies to take their football more seriously because there's something to play for." Doctor Khumalo added.
