Report: Manchester United Star Refuses To Give Up Number For Raphael Varane

New Manchester United signing Raphael Varane did not get his preferred jersey number as one Red Devils star reportedly refused to give up his number.

The Frenchman was officially unveiled before United's 2021/22 Premier League opener against Leeds United on Saturday afternoon, despite a fee being agreed weeks ago.

Varane was showed off to the crowd and it was confirmed he will wearing be the No. 19 shirt, not the No. 4 he currently wears for the French national side while No.5, which he wore at Real Madrid, is occupied by Harry Maguire.

Manchester Evening News have now reported that Phil Jones was unwilling to give up the No. 4 jersey even though he is not expected to get minutes in the first team this season.

Jones has been linked with a departure from the club in recent campaigns, but the defender has struggled with injuries for the past few years, with his last appearance coming in the FA Cup against Tranmere Rovers in January 2020.

Varane joined up with his new teammates on Sunday and is now looking to make his United debut against Southampton next weekend.
