UEFA Champions League
Result: Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Manchester City
Date: 09 April 2019
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Sergio Aguero had a first-half penalty saved as Manchester City suffered defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final.
Aguero returned to the side after missing the FA Cup semi-final over the weekend, while Riyad Mahrez earned a re-call in place of Bernardo Silva.
There was a bit of drama in the early stages as the visitors were awarded a penalty after Danny Rose was adjudged to have handled in the box after consultation with the Video Assistant Referee.
The ever-reliant Aguero took responsibility but saw his spot-kick saved by Hugo Lloris, much to the joy of the Spurs supporters.
Spurs did see a bit more of the ball as the half went on and they went close breaking the deadlock on 26 minute through Harry Kane, whose close-range strike was kept out by Ederson.
The game opened up in the latter stages of the first half, but neither side were able to carve out a serious opening in the final third.
Spurs were dealt a blow 10 minutes into the second half as Kane hobbled off the pitch after a collision with Fabian Delph. He was replaced by Lucas Moura.
With the Citizens struggling to break down the Spurs defence, Pep Guardiola opted to withdraw Aguero with 20 minutes remaining and introduced Gabriel Jesus.
However, it was Spurs who broke the deadlock seven minutes later as Son Heung-min recovered from a poor first touch to rifle the ball under Ederson from eight-yards out.
Kevin de Bruyne and Leroy Sane were introduced in the latter stages of the half, but the home side were able to hold on for the slender win.
