Head coach of the Bavarian giants, Thomas Tuchel, has made it clear that he sees the signing of a defensive midfielder in this window as a priority.
Having missed out on Declan Rice to Arsenal, the German champions are still looking for a midfielder to protect their back four, and according to Sport, they are keen on landing France international Aurelien Tchouameni's signature.
During the previous off-season, he commanded a transfer fee of €80 million (R1.8 billion) when he joined Real from Monaco, but following the Spanish giants' signing of Jude Bellingham, and with the possibility of luring Kylian Mbappe to the Santiago Bernabeu in this window, Los Blancos could look to raise funds for a potential transfer of Tchouameni's national team captain by selling the deep-lying midfielder.
However, while the 33-time Bundesliga champions are seriously interested in signing the 23-year-old, it is reported that the Red Devils are too.
The same report claims that manager Erik ten Hag wants the midfielder at Old Trafford, but having already spent significant amounts on Andre Onana and Mason Mount, and with United closing in on the signing of Rasmus Hojlund, a deal for the Rouen native could be complicated to achieved, with more player sales at the Theatre of Dreams needing to take place before they can make a bid for the Les Bleus star.

Los Merengues are also believed to be open to loaning Tchouameni out for the upcoming season, though, something that is perhaps more feasible for the record Premier League champions if they are to secure the Frenchman's services.
