Real Madrid go into the new season as the reigning champions of Spain, having claimed the league crown from city rivals Atletico Madrid and finished 13 points ahead of Barcelona in 2021/22, and the player who spearheaded their charge to their championship victory was Karim Benzema.

The Frenchman led Spain's top division in both goals and assists last season, and will go into the new campaign as the league's second-highest earner, raking in €461 538 (R7.9 million) in gross earnings a week, according to Capology.

Los Blancos are the team with the most occupants among the 10 best-paid players in LaLiga, with six of their squad members on the list. Barcelona have three representatives, with Spanish veteran Sergio Busquets reportedly the highest-earning player at the Camp Nou.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup winner, who is said to take home €423 077 (R7.2 million) on a weekly basis, is entering the final year of his current deal with the Blaugrana, having already spent 17 years in Catalonia.

Busquets, a graduate of Barca's famed La Masia academy, is joined by another academy alumni among LaLiga's highest-paid players in Jordi Alba.

The treble-winning left-back departed the club during his youth, but made the move back to the home of the five-time European champions from Valencia to establish himself as one of the best fullbacks in the world. He is now said to earn €400 577 (R6.8 million) gross weekly.
