The Madrid-born Los Blancos coach played for Real's youth academy, but did not make it beyond that, and joined the club's coaching staff at the age of 26.
Marca have now claim that Benitez is called "Number 10" inside the dressing room.
It is apparently a joke about the fact that, although the Spaniard did not played at the highest level, he wants to give stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Sergio Ramos advice on how to handle the pressure at the club.
According to the Spanish newpaper, the players often don't understand Benitez's advice and he tries to correct things that have nothing to do with tactics.
His predecessor, Carlo Ancelotti, played at the highest level for Milan's legendary late-1980s team, winning the European Cup twice as a player.
The Italian was well respected inside the dressing room, while Benitez has already clashed with a number of star players such as Ronaldo, Ramos, James Rodriguez and Karim Benzema.
