Earlier this week, the Vigo native was confirmed as the Red Devils’ latest boss as he embarks on a journey with Africa’s most successful club, bringing an end to a three-year stint with Orlando Pirates.
The 47-year-old left the Buccaneers with three league matches remaining, as rumours of his move to the Cairo-based side began to circulate. Shortly after Al Ahly were confirmed as the latest Egyptian Premier League champions, Riveiro was announced as Marcel Koller’s successor.
The Buccaneers job was his first experience on the continent, and after a few years at Orlando Stadium – during which he won five domestic trophies – he is now on the cusp of leading the Club of the Century into what could be the biggest FIFA Club World Cup yet. Al Ahly are set to open the tournament with a fixture against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.
At the global spectacle, they will face formidable opposition such as Brazilian giants Palmeiras and Portuguese heavyweights FC Porto. However, Riveiro believes Al Ahly are on par with top European sides, insisting they lack nothing in comparison.
"I'm at a European club. You don't lack anything,” the Spaniard told Al Ahly TV, as per Yallakora.

He further stated that coaching a side of the 12-time African champions’ stature is a dream come true.
"This is what I have dreamed of and hoped for: to coach a team the size of Al-Ahly."
