The Club of the Century have confirmed the arrival of the 47-year-old, who takes over from Marcel Koller ahead of the global spectacle that is the FIFA Club World Cup.
The Vigo native becomes only the second Spaniard to lead the club, after Juan Carlos Garrido just over a decade ago.
The record African champions have not endured the best of the 2024/25 campaign by their lofty standards, having lost the CAF Super Cup to arch-rivals Zamalek, been eliminated in the third round of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup by Pachuca, and exited the CAF Champions League at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns.
The latter defeat led to the dismissal of the Zurich native, and now Riveiro will be looking to achieve even greater heights.
He will be hoping to be more successful than his compatriot Garrido, however, as the latter only managed to win the Egyptian Super Cup and CAF Confederation Cup.

Cups were what Riveiro specialised in during his time in South Africa, having won a total of five domestic titles with the Sea Robbers, and his immediate first task will be to try and win the newly expanded Club World Cup.
