Liverpool and Egypt superstar Salah won the award for a second successive year, becoming the first player from his country to be named Africa's finest for a second time.
He received 567 points overall, beating his club teammate and Senegal star Sadio Mane to the prestigious accolade. Mane received 440 points, while Arsenal and Gabon forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang completed the podium with 197 points – just four more than Manchester City and Algeria winger Riyad Mahrez.
Denis Onyango, meanwhile, was the only Premier Soccer League player among the final 10 nominees and ended up in the tenth position after collecting 45 points.
The Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper even received more points than €100 million (R1.59 billion) Manchester United target Kalidou Koulibaly, who has been starring for Napoli and Senegal. Onyango, who also made the African Team of the Year, ended the first voting round with seven points – one more than Koulibaly.
Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau was also on the initial shortlist but dropped out of the running after only receiving one point – as many as Liverpool's Naby Keita – in the first voting round.

Note: The CAF African Footballer of the Year is determined in three voting phases, with CAF's Technical and Development Committee voting in the first phase, CAF member association head coaches and captains voting in the second phase before a selected group of experts, legends and club coaches vote in the third and final phase.
