“We Have Been Rewarding Mediocracy” - Reader’s Voice

Default

Performance wise, the Premier Soccer League has dropped its standards dramatically over the years.

For the last couple of seasons, we haven't had a striker scoring consistently in the Absa Premiership, with frontmen rewarded for netting no more than 15 goals in a single campaign.

This past season, we’ve had joint top goal scorers on 11 goals in Mamelodi Sundowns' Percy Tau and Polokwane City's Rodney Ramagalela.

For me, we have been rewarding mediocrity for far too long now.

The PSL must set a 25-goal target as a minimum for top scorers to get rewarded. We can't keep this on and expect our football to grow. Let's go back to basics and resurrect our football.

What are your thoughts, how can the level of football improve in the PSL?

I agree 100% with Sir, our players a mediocre and they must first accept that as a point of departure. Secondly the target must be set for any player to be rewarded for good performance and yes 25 points must be a bench mark. South African players are so full of themselves they can't be criticized. For me I will suggest that when any team sign a player as a striker he must be given a target to achieve in a season and be given half of his salary at the beginning so that he can justify the remainder of his salary at the end of the season in view of what he has archived. For the season I still think none of the nominees deserve any trophy. Period.

PSL is way much tougher than it looks, and it's definitely the most unpredictable league. So to me it doesn't cone as a surprise that we don't see high scores like in other leagues where only one or two teams are title contenders season by season

@Tekhens The game in SA is too fast, that allows a lot of mistakes and rush decisions on the field, teams need to use brain speed than physical speed. no matter how fast you are if you take three touches someone who make a single touch is faster

11 goals is low and I agree up the bar to 16 maybe not 25, however why is sundowns a force in Africa if PSL standard is low? Percy deserve all the praise he is far from mediocre he is not a striker he outscored strikers and created more that most midfielders so lets put context

It is easier said than done. The defensive lines and tactical marking has improved while our strikers or technical coach have not yet adjusted and adapted to how strikers have to finish in front of goals. Their timing and worse free-kicks are very bad compared to those we see from top stars globally. SA teams not only need coaches but proper developmental structures to groom players.

My over all view is that, smaller teams and players from smaller teams shined the brightest, all because the big clubs (Chiefs and Pirates) were struggling and not really deserving all the "praises" they've been getting. Let's see if these mediocre players will shine in this coming season.

All the players are mediocre in PSL. They think they are good but they are not. The scouters and managers which means the clubs must change their approach in the game, they need to train players to do the basics . Our players are trying too hard to do things they do not know during the game. We are poor in front of goal because we want to score like messi and the europeans. We need our own identity which resembles where we are as a people football wise and right now we are just trying something we do not know. Pitso wants to play like barcelona in south africa, already that tells you about where we are going..nowhere fast. The last time our nation was successful was in 96, until now we have not won anything, I am starting to think that we won only by political interference in 96 because we have not replicated that ever since. Sundowns won the champions league mainly with the contribution of foreign players ie Laffor not tau. Since laffor is not playing and zakri gone you see that the so called best team in SA is lacking in terms of goals when playing in africa without these players. Anyways we are mediocre and we need to start critisicing the players instead of telling them they are good when they are very average and includes Tau, Shabba, Zwane, Yeye, Vilakazi, Nytama, Kekana, you can name them all , these guys are mediocre all of them and more players are worse. Let the player know he sucks so he can get better, these compliments we are giving to the players is making them work less than they are supposed to.
