The famous quote goes,"There's no time like the present, and no substitute for being present".The South African Premier Division has experienced unsatisfactory attendance in recent years.
Since the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, only two teams have consistently averaged over 30% in tickets sold for matches in the Absa Premiership. It is the two Soweto giants,Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. The 'standard' 30% alone does not fulfill expectations.Due to the poor turnout the level of football has been below standard.
According to Soccerway, the closest teams with high attendance are Mamelodi Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic. The 2010/11 season is the most recent with 'good' attendance figures. In the first round of the current season Amakhosi,Bloemfontein Celtic,Chippa Utd and Masandawana are the leaders of the pack in terms of attendance.
Good access to TV and live streaming in smartphones has played a role in igniting this situation.Unlike teams in Europe,PSL teams do not represent cities. It not like in Manchester,Madrid,Catalonia,Milan and London.
Will the attendance figures in SA ever improve or this is the downfall of association football in South Africa?
