SuperSport United's Win Will Be The Greatest SA Triumph – Reader’s Voice
Should SuperSport United win the Confederations Cup, it would be a bigger triumph than Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates' Champions League victories.
Of course, that is not to say the Confed Cup is bigger than the Champions League. It is merely by looking at the challenges they face ahead of the final.
The first is the issue of confidence. Yes, they won the MTN8 earlier this season but their Telkom Knockout semi-final loss to Bloemfontein Celtic was a major blow to their confidence. Losing it on penalties, no less, the one area they've dominated in the last few years, made things worse.
Of course, they managed a confidence boosting 3-0 victory against the high flying Golden Arrows in their last outing but the International break has been a nightmare for them.
The psychological effects of being involved in failed sudden-death World Cup qualifying matches and playing the most important game of your life in the space of less than a week is unimaginable. But that is what the spine of United has to contend with in their Confederations Cup final against TP Mazembe.
Six of Matsatsatsa's first choice XI were away with their national teams in must-win World Cup qualifiers and none returned with positive results.
Furthermore, their international commitments robbed them the chance of training with their teammates ahead of the historic match. The one chance they got to train together, was disrupted by a major hailstorm.
Add the fact that they were playing the defending champions in their own backyard and they were without Reneilwe Letsholonyane in that match.
Pirates and Sundowns had their fair share of challenges to overcome but the ones facing Matsatsantsa before the taking the field, is something else altogether.
