The Dutch football philosophy has dominated South African football in the 2011/12 season with Ruud Krol and Foppe De Haan challenging for league honours.
Although Krol got the better of De Haan when he led Orlando Pirates to a domestic treble feat, De Haan proved his worth with the Ajax Cape Town young team.
Cape Town City chairman John Comitis was with Ajax Cape Town during De Haan's tenure and surely admired the style of football played by Ajax at the time. Comitis is a confessed fan of total football and following Benni McCarthy's departure from the club, he went for a man with the Dutch roots, who understands the philosophy.
Jan Olde Riekerink ticked all the right boxes and Comitis has found his man. Olde Riekerink comes in with a lot of experience that can help The Citizens to rise above the clutter.
Although Olde is new in the PSL, he has an understanding of South African players. Having worked with his predecessor, McCarthy and also Steven Pienaar at Ajax, the Dutchman has some form of understanding when it comes to Mzansi born stars.
Having coached at the highest level, Olde Riekerink shouldn't struggle to hit the ground running. His countrymen have made the PSL their home in the past, it won't be a huge surprise if he turns City's fortunes around.
City have Olde at the wheel!
