Pitso is obsessed with continental success
Mamelodi Sundowns has onced again progressed to the quarter-finals of the Caf Champions League. The Patrice Motsepe owned club is the solo South African representative in continental interclub competitions.
Another South African giant- Orlando Pirates- has squandered their chances of progressing when they lost 2-1 to Horoya. Pitso Mosimane is obsessed with continental success and his side's form this campaign should send signals of how serious he takes this tournament.
South African teams are not ambitious enough to conquer the continent. This thing of harbouring an ambition of making the top eight shows how little local teams value CAF competitions. Anywhere around the world teams strive to make a top four finish- with a spot in the continental football- the target goal. Winning the local league is only a step into the CAF Champions League.
Most of South African teams only play to maintain an elite league status if not taking part in the top eight competition. Very few teams play to win the league title and not of all those teams sees winning the league as a stepping stone towards conquering African football. There more South African teams do well in Africa- the higher are the chances of having more teams playing in African interclub competitions. We had four teams in the CAF Competitions- two in the Champions League and two in the Confederations Cup- which means we have better chances of doing well this summer.
Are South African teams not ambitious enough to conquer Africa, as Sundowns is?
