Much has been made about Itumeleng Khune being left out of the next season’s Carling Black Label Cup poster and many have tied his absence to a potential departure.
The shot-stopper has long been linked with a move to Mamelodi Sundowns ahead of next season, as his contract talks with Chiefs have failed to secure his signature for the near future just yet.
The poster also excludes the likes of Eric Mathoho, Matthew Rusike, Josta Dladla, Siyabonga Nkosi and Mandla Masango, with all players but Tower set to be a free agents in June, and many have suggested that Khune could well be on his way out. However, I feel that this isn’t necessarily the case…
Back in January a similar situation unfolded at Mayfair when Orlando Pirates omitted Oupa Manyisa from the opening page of their website and their Facebook cover page.
The Bucs captain’s omission from that graphic was at the height of media reports claiming he would join Mamelodi Sundowns by the end of the January transfer window, but, as we know, no such deal transpired.
This is why I believe that Khune’s exclusion from the poster doesn’t necessarily mean he is leaving. It could be down to the fact that Brilliant Khuzwayo has done exceptionally well for Chiefs this season too.
After all, Tefu Mashamaite also hasn’t penned in a deal with Chiefs and he is included in the picture, and who knows what Tefu will decide about his future.
Khosi fans, it is easy to look into these things, but let’s not have this weigh on our minds. What are your thoughts on the poster?
