The McCarthy brothers are famous in the South African football fraternity, with Benni having made his name overseas, while his older brother, Jerome, went big on the local front.
Jerome, who is four years older than Benni, played for Santos, Manning Rangers and Kaizer Chiefs, among other clubs, before a knee injury forced him to retire. However, it is his stint at Naturena that we are interested in.
Known for his creative play and precise corner tacking, Jerome was destined for great things, however, he struggled to make the grade with Amakhosi. It was evident that he preferred life in Cape Town…
He struggled to feature regularly for Chiefs and was soon loaned to Benni’s former club, Ajax Cape Town, before hanging up his boots.
Benni, on the other hand, joined Chiefs’ Soweto rivals, Pirates, at the end of his career. Arriving at Parktown in 2011, McCarthy became an instant hit with the Ghost.
Helping the team record the famous double treble, ‘Big Brother’ placed himself in the legendary books of the club by scoring crucial goals, two of which came in the Soweto Derby.
His title triumph meant he became the first South African footballer to have won three league titles with three different football teams on two different continents.
It is quite interesting to see how both McCarthy brothers landed up playing for rival clubs in Soweto. Who do you think won this derby battle – Jerome or Benni?
