Many questioned the transfer of former Platinum Stars goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane to Orlando Pirates, as fans were expecting a much higher profile signing to take place.
However, and after studying the stats, Mpontshane does have one outstanding quality which sets him apart from Itumeleng Khune and Brighton Mhlongo - who are amongst the top goalkeepers in the land.
Per game and on average, Mpontshane catches the ball from crosses 3.67 times per game - with Mhlongo’s rate coming in at 0.75 and Khune not making any attempts to go out and collect balls from crosses whipped into the box.
This is an outstanding statistic as it shows his willingness and confidence in dealing with crosses coming into the box. It also shows that he is a player who commands his 18-yard area, this was something Meyiwa did naturally. Mpontshane’s competence in this regard can only but benefit the squad's defence.
Do you think this quality will help Mpontshane succeed at Pirates?
