Mamelodi Sundowns have the ambition of reigning supreme not only locally, but on the continent as well. Owner Patrice Motsepe’s injection of cash into the club has gone a long way and now looks a side much more capable of competing for all honours.
The highest honour we could compete for is indeed the CAF Champions League, and winning a trophy of this kind will mean more than just lifting a metal cup.
If clubs in South Africa have not taken note of Downs’ ever growing influence in the Premier Soccer League, winning the Champions League will no doubt prove that we are here to stay.
Orlando Pirates is the only club in South African football proud enough to print a star above the badge of their playing shirts. Should the country have two teams with such a status, the hunt could be on to get the next star above the badge and could well spark a new rivalry.
I also feel that our support base will grow, not only in South Africa but in Africa as well. We are currently the third-most followed team in the land, behind Kaizer Chiefs and Pirates. Fans want to support winning teams, and winning the highest African honour will prompt fans to fill stadiums.
Winning the Champions League may even spark an era of dominance. In the 70’s and 80’s, English giants Liverpool became a ruthless outfit in Europe after getting a taste of continental success.
This may even happen to Downs, and with a coach like Pitso Mosimane at the helm, he will do all in his power to win the biggest competitions.
Do you think winning the Champion’s League will put us on the map for good?
