Vasco Da Gama head coach, Tony De Nobrega, admits that Mamelodi Sundowns have ‘too much quality’ in their squad but is convinced his team can go out there and cause an upset.
The Brazilians will play host to the Parow Park Boys on Sunday afternoon in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup.
This is the second time in three years that Vasco have flown the flag for Cape football, despite many having written the team off right from the start.
De Nobrega admits that it will not be easy facing a team packed with quality, but doesn’t see why Vasco won’t be able to cause a shock against Downs.
“Now that we have got to this stage, we are only 90 minutes away from the final. We are going to go there and give it our best shot,” the coach told Fan Park.
“Not many people give us a chance, but we have to go there and give ourselves a chance – that is all that matters.
“On the day, with a bit of luck, and if we play to our potential, then I don’t see why not.”
Sundowns were famously beaten 5-0 by Celtic last week and it was a result which many feel couldn’t have come at a more perfect time for Vasco.
Regardless, De Nobrega isn’t reading too much into the result, but has revealed his team will take a similar approach to their dramatic 3-2 win over Black Leopards - which saw them sit back in the first-half before going full-throttle in the second.
“There is too much quality in that [Sundowns] side. Anyone can have an off day and in cup games all form goes out the window. It is on the day," he continued.
“We just have to hope that they have another bad day. If we go out there thinking we can match Sundowns and play them off the park then we are in for a shock.
“That is the way we approached the Leopards game. I don’t think this game will be too different from the Leopards game. It has worked for us and we will use it.
“Celtic? It was a crazy game that. Bloemfontein Celtic beat Sundowns 5-0 and the next game they lost 1-0 to Mairtzburg. You can’t write too much into that.
“Sundowns still have quality all over the park, they have players that can score and can cause all sorts of problems. It was just a bad day…”
Sundowns have made the finals of the Nedbank Cup twice in the last seven years. Do you think Vasco will be able to upset the Brazilians?
