The curtain may be closing on this season's Absa Premiership title race, as Kaizer Chiefs move one step closer to claiming the league trophy.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ valiant efforts to retain their trophy hit a stumbling block in their recent 5-0 loss at the hands of Bloemfontein Celtic a couple of days ago, leaving Chiefs three points away from becoming the champions.
Along the way, the race produced many twists and turns, leaving fans on the edges of their seats, right up until this point of the season. Here are some of this campaign's highlights!
Chiefs' Unbeaten Run
Working in Chiefs' favour, the Amakhosi accumulated the most points in the first-half of the season, seeing them end that period without losing a single game. This was the first punch thrown and things have mainly swung in Chiefs' favour.
Chiefs' First League Loss
The 17th of February saw Chiefs record their first league loss of the season, with SuperSport United beating the Glamour Boys 2-0 on the night. Many opposition fans sensed a downfall from there on in. The pendulum had swung in the favour of Sundowns...
The Soweto Derby
Leading up to the game against Orlando Pirates, Chiefs saw off Township Rollers and Ajax Cape Town in the CAF Champions League and Absa Premiership respectively. With the derby ending in a 0-0 stalemate and Amakhosi losing the following league fixture against Maritzburg United, rivals Downs and Bidvest Wits began to smell blood.
Celtic’s 5-0 Win
This was the final nail in the coffin so to say, as it was a morale crushing loss. Chiefs fought to a 1-0 win against the University of Pretoria before Celtic did the business on Pitso Mosimane's team. That left a 13-point gap between the two teams with just five games to go. It seems that there is a steep hill to climb for Downs, unless, of course, another twist occurs!
