There are certain things that only football players will understand, and it stems from watching the game from a young age.
I’ve listed five things that only we’ll understand about the game, so let’s stop trying to explain ourselves!
1. You Can Never Change Teams!
If there is one golden rule in football, it’s that a fan does not simply change the team he or she supports. Yes, players will chop and change teams throughout their careers, but fans must stay loyal! So the next time your friend, who doesn’t know much about football, tells you that he has changed teams - kindly tell him to find a new sport to watch.
2. “It’s Just A Game!”
Wrong, it is never just a game – it is do or die! It is bragging rights! It is pride, and it is many other things that outsiders just don’t understand. Although, in 1000 years from now, none of this may matter, right now, let me cry over the fact that Manchester United won’t win the league this season!
3. Your Number Must Represent Your Position
If there is one thing that frustrates me in football, is when I see strikers wearing defenders’ numbers, and defenders wearing attacking numbers. For example, we’ll all remember William Gallas ‘donning’ the number 10 jersey at Arsenal a few years ago. Just how much that annoyed me, I’ll never be able to explain in words.
4. All Referees Are Cheats…When Decisions Go Against Your Team
Let’s be honest for a second… when the referee blows in favour of your team – he’s the best ref in the league. When he blows against your side – then you question why he was ever given the job in the first place? We’ve all sympathised with a match official when he’s called it wrong, but when the decision results in a goal in favour of the opposition, we forget that he merely has human vision!
5. The Offside Rule
How many times have you tried to explain the offside rule to somebody who doesn’t understand the game? Countless times for me. I’ve given up on this if I’m honest. Nobody seems to get that if the man is behind the defence at the time the ball is played, he is offside! To be fair, referees get this wrong sometimes too...
