The much anticipated Nedbank Ke Yona Team Search officially got underway on Saturday, 18 April 2015, at Mbombela Stadium, where aspiring hopefuls came out in their numbers to make an impression.
Mpumalanga is the home of some of the country’s best footballers such as Mandla Masango and Happy Jele – which is an inspiration to all the trialists who came through on the day hoping to impress the quartet of Shakes Mashaba, Owen Da Gama, Khabo Zondo and Mike Mangena.
The Ke Yona Team Search was first launched in 2013 by Nedbank in a bid to give unknown players the opportunity to showcase their talent and make their football dreams happen.
It has proven to be such a success with more than 300 players making their way to the Mbombela Stadium despite the wet conditions, in the hope of grabbing a unique opportunity to make the Nedbank Cup Ke Yona team.
One of the many aspects that have made the Ke Yona Team Search popular is the heartening stories of players making great sacrifices to get to the trials and eventually becoming professional footballers.
Khulekani Maseko managed to make it to the trials just on time, after walking over five kilometres from Mhluzi in Middleburg to get to Mbombela Stadium.
Speaking on behalf of the Ke Yona Team selectors, Bafana Bafana head coach, Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba applauded the players that came in abundance to the Mbombela Stadium.
“We are quite excited about the talent we saw here in Mpumalanga. You could tell that the youngsters were hungry to play and walk in the footsteps of their football heroes that hail from their province, such as Mandla Masango, “said the Bafana Bafana mentor.
