The Difference In Chiefs & Downs’ Transfer Fees Expenditure

With Kaizer Chiefs having piped Sundowns to be crowned this year’s PSL Champions, many have been wondering about the difference in expenditure spent by both clubs that saw them win the title.

The Brazilians are famous for spending big each year and they are often accused of splashing out money unnecessarily, while the Chiefs fans slate their club for the polar opposite.

As a result, I have opted to look back at the last three seasons and look at the money spent in each transfer window by the two teams. Bare in mind, figures aren’t exact but it is rather a rough estimate.

Here are the transfer fees spent by the two clubs…

Chiefs 2012/13 (PSL Champions)
Transfer Fees Spent: R6.5 million

Chiefs 2013/14 (PSL Runners-up)
Transfer Fees Spent: R7 million

Chiefs 2014/15 (PSL Champions)
Transfer Fees Spent: R8 million

Chiefs Total Expenditure: R21.5 million

As on can see, Chiefs have often stuck to a base figure of R6-8 million per transfer season.  Now lets look at Mamelodi Sundowns’ figures…

Sundowns 2012/13 (10th place finish)
Transfer Fees Spent: R20 million

Sundowns 2013/14 (PSL Champions)
Transfer Fees Spent: R11 million

Sundowns 2014/15 (Position not confirmed yet)
Transfer Fees Spent: R7 million

Sundowns Total Expenditure: R38 million

The Brazilians on the other hand have spent a massive figure in the last three seasons. Spending a dramatic R14 million more in the season that Chiefs were crowned champions proves that money doesn’t necessarily buy success.

The club learnt that and the very next season they almost halved their expenses to be crowned champions.

This season though, little separated Chiefs and Sundowns in their respective transfer windows, and the title race was ongoing until the fourth last day of the 2014/15 season.

What worked in Stuart Baxter’s favour is that the club realized that it is crucial to keep the core of the team together and add reinforcements where needed, thus keeping figures low.

That is exactly why Sundowns won the title the season after spending big.

What do you make of these figures?
