Surprise Packages In This Year's AFCON So Far

Every tournament always seems to produce a surprise package, and in this year’s Africa Cup Of Nations its no different. The Fan Park crew have picked three teams who they think have surprised so far.

Congo did not initially qualify for the tournament, but have definitely caught they eye after making the most of their luck. They were unbeaten in group A, with them winning two matches and drawing one. Claude Le Roy’s men only got through to the AFCON after Rwanda were disqualified for fielding a suspended player in their preliminary encounter. Congo have defied the odds and the tiny nation are now in the quarter-finals.

Equatorial Guinea

Equatorial Guinea has had a real rollercoaster ride since being disqualified for fielding an ineligible player during the qualification stage. The country only qualified for this year’s tournament because they came to CAF’s rescue to host it, as Morocco pulled out at the last minute due to Ebola fears. Equatorial Guinea went unbeaten in group A, beating favourites Gabon and drawing with last year’s finalists Burkina Faso.

This one is up for debate, but at the start of the tournament Ghana were not seen as one of the teams to get out of the group of death. Weeks before the tournament, they appointed former Chelsea boss Avram Grant as their manager and his first competitive game in charge was the 1-0 loss to Senegal in their opening match of the tournament. They managed to defy the odds in the group by going on to beat Algeria and Bafana Bafana to finish top. Ghana could well be the surprise package to win this year’s competition.
