Since Itumeleng Khune was passed fit to play again back in December, the stern Itu fans have called for him to take his rightful place between the sticks. Last night they got their wish when he stepped onto the field for his first league game in 2015.
His presence was immense from the offset as he looked composed in goal and he helped keep a clean sheet against Ajax Cape Town.
It was good to see the skipper back in the starting XI, but his uncertain future has still left many of the fans concerned and angered over the situation.
Still, he showed no signs of his mind being elsewhere and he put on another solid display for the Amakhosi.
Khune’s return to the league comes just days before the famous Soweto Derby and, after last night’s performance, he will surely be in goals again for this fixture.
Should he continue to prove solid during the derby encounter, Stuart Baxter will certainly be pondering over whether or not Khune should remain first-choice for the remainder of the season, with Brilliant Khuzwayo moving back onto the bench.
Just as the outcome of derbies can make or break a coach, it can do the same for the players. If Khune does well on Saturday against rivals Orlando Pirates, he could well cement his place as the first-choice goalkeeper once again.
Khosi fans, do you think Khune’s place is guaranteed or will the derby decide matters?
