The key to success in a season is to have a capable team, along with capable replacements. The Fan Park takes a look a look at some of the best benches in the last 15 years.
Bench: Lilian Thuram, Rafael Marquez, Deco, Ronaldinho, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Bojan
Barcelona has often had strong squads filled with superstars, but this bench was something special. To be able to leave the likes of Ronaldinho and Thuram out shows you what type of quality they had at their disposal.
Bench: Martin Keown, Jose Antonio Reyes, Sylvain Wiltord, Gael Clichy and Nwankwo Kanu
The year of the ‘invincibles’ is still spoken about to this day and it truly was an awesome Arsenal side. They had a balanced starting XI and if you look at the bench above, they had the quality to change things up if needed.
Year 2005 -2006
Bench: Eidur Gudjohnson, Hernan Crespo, Glen Johnson, Claude Makelele and Damien Duff
In the 2005/06 season Chelsea lifted the Premier League trophy for the first time in 40-years, and it was also Jose Mourinho’s first for the club.
Bench: Andriy Shevchenko, Alessandro Nesta, Cafu and David Beckham
AC Milan might not be the force that they once were, but not so long ago they had the luxury of having stars like the ones above on their bench. Milan didn’t win the title that year, but finished in the top three.
Year: 2010 World Cup
Bench: Javi Martinez, Fernando Torres, Juan Mata, Carlos Marchena, Cesc Fabregas, Fernando Llorente, Jesus Navas and David Silva
Hands down the best side in the World Cup that year - aside from the fact that they lost their opening match. They had an awesome squad in South Africa and the names above would have walked into any national side.
