Good morning Khosi fans! Yesterday it was announced by the Siya crew that Reyaad Pieterse’s future with Kaizer Chiefs will largely depend on what happens with Itumeleng Khune… So should he opt to compete against Itumeleng Khune or move elsewhere where he is guaranteed game time?
The 22-year-old goalkeeper is considered one of the most promising talents in the country, having emerged out of the Nike Chance competition, where he played abroad too.
However, despite having burst onto the scene last season with a handful of games, Pieterse has struggled for game time.
Since Itumeleng Khune’s injury back in September, Brilliant Khuzwayo has taken over between the sticks and looks set to be Khune's main rival for the number one jersey for some time.
This then leaves Pieterse in a bit of a pickle… Should Khune, who hinted he could remain at Chiefs, opt to extend his stay with Amakhosi, it would mean Pieterse will revert back to being third choice goalkeeper.
However, if Khune lands up leaving as a free agent at the end of this season, Pieterse will move up the pecking order and could enjoy more game time if he is second in line.
With only a year-and-a-half remaining on his current deal with the Amakhosi, Pieterse will need to sit down and seriously think about his future.
If he sticks around he will have to compete with both Khuzwayo and Khune, and if he manages to pull the rabbit out of the hat, he could be handed the fairytale story that Khuzwayo has enjoyed.
However, if competing with those two shot-stoppers is too much, Pieterse should then consider making a move away from Naturena.
It is undoubtedly a tricky situation, and one which would be confusing for any goalkeeper… What do you think Pieterse should do?
