With ‘vision 2022’ in mind, the Siya Crew caught up with Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba in this week’s edition of Soccer Laduma in what was an insightful interview.
Mashaba elaborated on the points of how Bafana is progressing and what the team had learnt in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
When asked where we are in terms of the overall plan for the national team he said, “There is nothing out of place. Everything is still on track. I’ve indicated that as much as people back at home were disappointed, we were also feeling the same.”
“If you look at Bafana, we have been building a good team. We sat as a technical committee and we asked, what is the use of building a good team while we are losing? How are we going to assess and evaluate ourselves? So we said we’ve got to make it a point that we win,” Shakes said.
Reflecting on the AFCON he said, “Yes it ruined our hopes to go out, but we have lost and its good we can learn from it. It is good that we lost at a high level. Imagine we lost in friendly games – what would you have said? That’s when the whole plan would fall into disarray,” Mashaba added.
Reflecting on Mashaba’s sentiments, do you still believe in the current squad's plans?
