Orlando Pirates’ midfield powerhouse, Issa Sarr, has been a revelation for the Buccaneers this season and his form is down to the inspiration from a fellow countryman of his.
The Senegalese midfielder has turned out on 26 occasions for Pirates this season, where has been instrumental in conducting play from the heart of the park. But who inspired him?
When asked about his inspiration by Fan Park, he responded, “My inspiration? You know, when I was in Senegal, there was one very good player. You know El Haji Diouf?
“That was the player! He did many good things for us on the field of play. He was very good. He was a lion also.
“You remember the World Cup in 2002? I was young and watching TV. He is, personally, the person I looked up to.
“Now he is old and I don’t know where he is, but he inspired me to be what I am now.”
Diouf spent his whole career playing abroad, where he went on to turn out for Liverpool as well as Benni McCarthy’s former club Blackburn Rovers. He is currently in Malaysia playing for Sabah.
Do you think Sarr and El Haji Diouf have any similarities?
