Ramahlwe Mphahlele is said to be on the brink of joining Kaizer Chiefs this transfer window, but what exactly does his move mean for the rest of the Amakhosi backline?
The 26-year-old has spent most of his season playing at rightback, and bringing him into Naturena would most likely see him slot into his natural position.
Siboniso Gaxa’s exit from the squad means there is a void to be filled out wide at the back, and “Rama” would be the ideal replacement for “Pa”.
This, however, means Kgotso Moleko will once again be benched and only utilized as a back-up defender in that position, while Lorenzo Gordinho will fall into the same boat as he can play in the fullback role too.
It’s not only at rightback where Mphahlele’s abilities and experience will cause a stir. The Limpopo-born defender can also ply his trade in the centre of defence.
This means that he could very well be partnering up the likes of Erick Mathoho in the middle should there be a need for it. If this happens, one of either Gordinho or Daniel Cardoso will be forced to miss out again.
It is, however, unlikely that Rama will play in the middle of the back four given how thin they are with resources at rightback, but the former Moroka Swallows man does pose a threat to some of his potentially new teammates, while it cannot be denied that he does bring in good competition to the team too.
Should he arrive, what do you make of Rama’s appointment?
