Mpho Mvelase has become routinely used to Thabo Rakhale stealing his limelight, after the midfielder’s debut start for Pirates was overshadowed by Jomo’s great goal in the 2-1 win against Mpumalanga Black Aces.
A similar situation unravelled seven years ago, in April 2008, when the two Orlando Pirates teammates were teenagers on opposing sides.
It was the final of the SAFA Metropolitan U19 tournament at the Seshego Stadium in Limpopo, and it saw Mvelase playing for North West, while Rakhale was representing the Gauteng team.
Mvelase looked set to put his name in the headlines when he opened the scoring in the final to give NW a 1-0 lead, but the open, free-scoring game resulted in more goals.
Even when NW were 2-0 up, their joy was short-lived as a Rakhale-inspired Gauteng drew level thanks to Maritzburg United’s Thokozani Sekotlong.
NW went back into the lead again with 15 minutes to go, but five minutes later it was 3-3 again, as Gauteng kept coming back.
It was as if it was written in the stars for Rakhale, who stole the limelight with his match-winning goal with just one minute remaining on the clock.
The Man of the Match’s brilliance handed Gauteng the trophy, and denied Mvelase his ‘headline’ on that day too.
Now, the two players play alongside each other at Parktown. Hopefully Mvelase’s stolen limelight was just a once off and that the two can shine together to create new headlines.
What are your thoughts on these two players?
