Lucas Radebe is South Africa’s Glamour Boys of football. He is a legend of the nation and receives the admiration and love of nearly everyone from Mzansi, but what is his childhood story?
Growing up in one of Soweto’s most dangerous areas of Diepkloof, like most young boys, Radebe used football as his outlet in life and it did indeed save his life.
One day he was driving to the shop to buy drinks for his mom and a bullet unexpectedly ripped through his car. It went straight through his back before exiting straight through his left leg.
He has often admitted that the bloodstaining moment was a reason why he became more determined to make something of his life and get away from a rough childhood.
Rhoo’s brush with death was indeed a defining moment in his life and the people of Mzansi are certainly glad he lived to tell the tale and become one of South Africa’s greatest exports.
His story is a lesson for aspiring footballer out there. Even though it may seem that Radebe’s life is a peach, there is some traumatic memories behind that wide-eyed smile.
