When we see coaches on TV, it is usually when they are in their football frame of mind - shouting on the sidelines and correcting their teams when they fall out of formation. Today, the Fan Park crew looks at the hobbies of some the coaches have in South Africa.
Roger De Sa – Watersports, Paddling
A love for the beach and the water comes naturally when you live in Cape Town, and Roger De Sa certainly enjoys spending his free time lazing in the sun and lapping up the crystal blue waters of the Mother City. The 50-year-old can often be seen posting pictures on Twitter of him on a stand up paddle.
Gavin Hunt – Golf
Golf is a highly popular sport amongst the footballing fraternity and in particular with Bidvest Wits coach, Gavin Hunt. The 50-year-old has such a love for the game that he assigns Thursdays as his day to relax on the course and improve his swing.
Steve Komphela – Harley Davidson Club
The philosophical coach is known to have a Harley Davidson as one of his illustrious rides. To have a bike of that nature, one must form part of the Harley Davidson club, where they go on rides over the course of the weekend. Komphela was once spotted in the stands serving a one-match suspension for Free State Stars, sporting a Harley Davidson leather jacket.
Clive Barker – Various Activities
Known as ‘The Dog’, Barker’s whole life has been centred around football, and that remains the same - even today at the age of 70. Barker has a holiday house at San Lameer’s resort in Durban, where one can play golf, play bowls, swim, fish and enjoy time on the beach. It is hard to imagine Barker being involved in anything but golf.
Eric Tinkler – Golf
The Orlando Pirates coach is another keen golfer on this list. In his free time he could often be seen enjoying a game with Roger De Sa - back when they were at Pirates together. De Sa’s exit hasn’t hindered his frequency of enjoying a four-ball.
Muhsin Ertugral – Coffee at Giovanni’s Deli
Although not really a physical activity, the former Kaizer Chiefs and Ajax Cape Town coach can be seen spending a large portion of his day relaxing at Giovanni’s in Green Point, Cape Town. He can often be seen catching up with his friends over a coffee and a sandwich.
Stuart Baxter – Gym & Wine
The English tactician is arguably one of the fittest coaches in the Absa Premiership, and this is because he enjoys working out and keeping himself fit outside of what he does with the team. To reward himself after his hard work, Baxter also enjoys a glass of wine to keep him relaxed. Talk about the sweet life!
