Players Who’ve Passed Their Best

Footballers don't remain superstars forever, and there comes a time where they beging struggling to churn out top performances week in and week out.

Today, the Fan Park Crew takes a look at some players who are past their prime and should consider hanging up their boots, or moving out of the spotlight:

Iker Casillas (33-Years-Old)

He didn’t perform particularly well against Schalke on Tuesday night, and hasn’t been at his best for some time now. When Mourinho was in charge at the Bernabéu, the goalkeeper hardly saw the starting XI, begging the question for on-lookers – is the Spanish goalkeeper finally done? He just might be. Despite some wavy performances, Iker will forever remain a legend.

Rio Ferdinand (36-Years-Old)

The defender left Manchester United last season, with many fans surprised to not see him remain at the club. He joined QPR, after a successful 12 years at the Red Devils, but he has looked slow and far off the pace in the Premier League this season, though he is set to hang up his boots after this campaign draws closed.

Xavi Hernandez (35-Years-Old)

As Barcelona’s season has progressed with success, the midfielder’s career seems to have come to an abrupt halt. He doesn’t look as fit as two or three years ago, and it won’t be a surprise to see Xavi move to the MLS at the end of the season, where he has been linked with Orlando City.

Steven Gerrard (34-Years-Old)

The Liverpool man, who is also on his way to the MLS, is another player who we perhaps thought would’ve retired at his life-long club. The Merseyside club have showed that without their captain they can be just as effective, and no longer need him. I find his move to America will be a strange one, as he’s only ever known one club. Maybe, just maybe, Gerrard should reconsider his deal.

Robin van Persie (31-Years-Old)

Although he’s not as old as the others, perhaps the Dutchman’s heydays are over. He rarely completes 90 minutes when he starts, and rarely starts due to injury. Perhaps United should allow him to leave at the end of his contract, because his best days seem over.

Which other players do you believe are passed their expiry dates? Let us know in the comments section below.
