Mamelodi Sundowns have constantly been linked with the biggest and best football players in the country, and this season was no exception. Our mega-rich boss, Patrice Motsepe, made it no secret that he wants to transform the club into an African powerhouse, and part of that strategy means signing the best players available.
Let’s now take a look at a few high profile names that Downs were linked with this season but failed to sign.
The Mpumalanga Black Aces striker was linked with Downs and Orlando Pirates, and after weeks of speculation that he could sign for either club, the move never happened.
This was, without a doubt, one of the biggest transfer talking points this season after Ace reportedly agreed terms with Downs, but the clubs failed to finalise negotiations. What may have stalled the deal was the fact that Ace was on national duty in Equatorial Guinea at the time at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, and it would have taken a miracle for all the paper work to be finalised before the transfer deadline.
Khune, like Manyisa, was linked with the club at the same time and had the moves materialised, they could have been two of the most expensive deals in South African football history. However, the move never happened, but Khune is yet to commit to Kaizer Chiefs… so there remains a possibility that we could see Itu in a Downs shirt in the future.
In a bid to strengthen the left-back position, Phungwayo’s excellent form for Pirates this season caught the attention of coach Pitso Mosimane and he was linked with the club. Like many players on this list, Phungwayo is yet to decide his immediate future and Downs will no doubt keep tabs on the situation.
Which players do think we should go for again?
